Venice Transport Italy - Venice Italy is one of the world’s most fabled cities of art and architecture. The city of Venice is filled with architectural wonders and riches, but is also sitting on the very edge of becoming devoured by the encroaching ocean. Vivid colors, dark canals and spectacular sights than you’ll ever see anywhere else in the world.

The major airport for Venice is the Aeroporto Marco Polo, about 7km (4 1/3 miles) north of the city on the mainland. Special ATVO shuttle buses connect to Piazzale Roma close to Venice’s Santa Lucia train station. Also, ACTV bus no 5 will make the same trip in about 30 to 45 minutes and is less expensive. A land taxi is also available from the airport to Piazzale Roma. Additionally, if cost isn’t a constraint, private water taxis are available and are very convenient.

There isn’t a public transit system in Venice, so to speak. The only way to explore this city is by walking. Keep in mind that the streets are quite twisted and confusing, some of which end in blind alleys or spill into a canal. There are footbridges everywhere – so plan to get lost while exploring, and enjoy the unique experience (and plan on the time it will take to get un-lost!). The best, and most detailed maps are available at news kiosks at the train station and around San Marco.

Canal Cruises are available from Piazza San Marco to the Ferrovia. This is essentially “Main Street” in Venice. The condos on each side are home to the city’s titled families, as well as privileged expats. The gondola is expensive, but a romantic way to cruise the canal. There are 12 gondola stations around Venice, and a number of smaller stations.

Additionally, a system of water ferries operated by the ACTV serve the Grand Canal, the outskirts, and the outer islands. These are also expensive, but nowhere near the cost of a Gondola ride. Water taxis, also expensive, serve key points in the city.
