The main airport for Toronto is the Toronto Island Airport which many major airlines fly into. Transportation to and from the Toronto Airport is available by taxi (however pricey) or the Airport Express bus which travels between the airport, bus terminal, and major downtown hotels. The GO Transit bus also transports passengers to Yorkdale or York Mills subway stations. Fare is very inexpensive for the buses compared to taxi service. For more information about the best transportation to downtown Toronto from the airport, visit www.toronto.ca/ttc.
Toronto transit is run by the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC). This system includes the subway, bus system, streetcars, and light rapid transit. Fares are somewhat inexpensive with discounted unlimited tickets available for weekends. The subway system is very fast and convenient, with three lines – Bloor-Danforth, and Yonge-University-Spadina, and the Sheppard.
The light rapid transit (LRT) system provides transportation between downtown and the waterfront and runs from Union Station to Spadina with stops along the way. Transfers from the subway to LRT are free at Union Station.
Toronto also offers a network of buses and streetcars that provide transportation to the parts of the city where the subway doesn’t. Remember to pick up a transfer ticket if going from the subway to the bus or streetcar system.
Taxi service is somewhat expensive in Toronto and not recommended unless absolutely necessary. Taxis can be hailed on the street, nearby major hotels, or called for service. Rental cars are available at the airport, however considering that Toronto is considered one of the worst cities in Canada in which to drive – renting a car is also not recommended while visiting this city. The public transit system does a phenomenal job, and visitors should have no problem getting to wherever they need to go by using it.
Ferry service is also available that travel to the Toronto Islands. Fairs are reasonable and these rides always provide a unique view of Toronto from the water.
