Seattle Transportation Washington - Seattle is a stunning city that offers a beautiful waterfront, quaint cafes, stunning mountains, ferryboats, shopping and entertainment galore. Seattle is a city that is best known as the coffee capital of America. This is a city that is immersed in outdoor activities – with so many amazing mountains around the city, this is actually an idea location for hikers, mountain bikers, anglers, campers, skiing, and more.
The major airport for Seattle is the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. Metro transit buses are available to and from the airport to Seattle as are Sound Transit regional express buses. Taxis and rental cars, as well as various door-to-door shuttle services are available.

Seattle’s Metro system is primarily a bus network which offers free rides within the downtown area. The Ride Free area is between Alaskan Way to Sixth Avenue west, and I-5 to the East, Battery Street to the north, and South Jackson Street to the south. Since most of the city’s major hotels are within this area – it is conceivable to enjoy a vacation in downtown Seattle without paying a dime for transportation.
Outside of the downtown area, visitors can purchase all-day passes or a visitor’s pass which can be used on buses, water taxi, and the waterfront Streetcar.
The Waterfront Streetcar operates old-fashioned streetcars along the waterfront from Pier 70 to Pioneer Square and east to the corner of Fourth Avenue South and South Jackson Street in the edge of the International District.
The Seattle Monorail (www.seattlemonorail.com) is an elevated train that leaves from Westlake Center shopping mall and travels to the Frank Gehry-designed-rock-music museum. Departures are every 10 minutes and fare is very inexpensive.
A Water Taxi also operates between the downtown Seattle waterfront and Seacrest Park.
Washington State Ferries (www.wsdot.wa.gov/ferries) offer a very extensive ferry system that offers a number of scenic trips to various islands and locations along the coast. These ferries provide an opportunity for a wonderful cheap scenic cruise, and fares are extremely reasonable.
Taxis are available throughout the city, but are difficult to hail in the street. It is best to call them, or wait at the taxi stands at the major hotels. Rates are reasonable for taxi service as well.
Walking Seattle on foot is also very easy. Most of downtown is wonderfully easy to navigate on foot, however the city is quite hilly, so be prepared to climb steep streets at times. However if you get too tired, find a local bus stop and catch a free ride on one of the downtown buses.
