Paris Transport

Paris France Transport - Paris, France’s “City of Light” is one of the most romantic and culturally diverse cities in the world. Art, music and architectural masterpieces are scattered across this famous city. Sights to be seen by visitors include the Eiffel Tower, Notre-Dame, the Arc de Triomphe, as well as an array of quaint sidewalk cafes, parks, and gardens. At night – Paris’ beauty proves to visitors why it is called the City of Light.

Paris offers two airports – the Orly and the Charles de Gaulle. June through September is the most popular tourist season and travel is always crowded and busy during this time. There are a variety of options to get to and from Paris from the airport. Free shuttle buses will transport passengers to the Roissy rail station from which RER trains (line B) takes travelers to the major Paris Metro stations. Another option are the Air France shuttle buses which transport visitors from Roissy to central Paris. Taxis are also available from all major airports.

Paris has a great transportation system, however a city like this that is so rich in history, culture and artistry should be enjoyed as much as possible on foot. However the Paris Metro system is an efficient and fast way to get around Paris. Lines are numbered and final destinations are marked on each subway map and on the train cars. Some routes require a “correspondence”, which sometimes requires a long walk to another platform. The Paris-Visite discount pass is valid for several days on all public transport including Metro, buses, and RER trains. The Carte Mobilis pass also offers unlimited travel. The Carte Orange pass is ideal for visitors who are staying longer than just a few days – as it offers unlimited transport travel for 1 week.

RER Trains pass through the center of paris and travel faster than the Metro. It works the same and accepts metro tickets. The RER serves a large number of stops throughout central Paris. Tickets, maps and schedules are available at Paris Metro (www.parismetro.com).

Buses in Paris take much longer to travel on than the metro. Fares are the same and the same tickets can be used on both Bus and Metro. RATP bus maps are located at the office on place de la Madeleine or at the RATP offices at 54 Quai de La Rapee, 12e. Another bus option is the Balabus – which are large-window orange-and-white motor coaches running limited hours between Gare de Lyon and the Grande Arche de La Defense.

The Batobus (www.batobus.com) is a 150-passenger ferry that operates along the Seine, stopping at a number of important points of interest. 1, 2, or 5 day passes are available.

Bicycling through Paris is a special way to experience the romantic beauty of this city. Paris features many miles of right-hand lanes that are designated for cyclists. Cycling is very popular in this city, especially at parks and gardens.

Driving within Paris by car is not at all recommended, as streets are narrow and confusing, and parking is near impossible. However, if necessary, most major rental companies are available throughout Paris.
