Oslo Transport Norway - Oslo, the stunning Norwegian capital, is a unique destination located at the head of the Oslo Fjord, and surrounded by beautiful forested hills. It is especially favorited by visitors that enjoy outdoor activities. The city proudly sports a multitude of parks, island beaches, and hundreds of kilometers of cross-country ski trails within the city. Additionally, Oslo offers unlimited attractions, shopping, and a cultural diversity that is unparalleled.
The main airport is Oslo Airport Gardermoen – only 45 km north of Oslo. Other local airports include the Sandefjord Airport Torp, and the Moss Airport Rygge. Oslo Norway features an excellent network of buses, streetcars, and subways that reach even the most isolated areas of the city, making driving in the city unnecessary. The “Oslo Pass” is a discount transport pass that allows free travel on all public transport, as well as free admission to museums and other attractions. Additionally it offers rebates on car rentals and even treats in restaurants. The cards can be purchased at Oslo hotels, stores, tourist offices, or travel agents.
Oslo has buses and trams that stop in the heart of town at Wessel’s Plass, at the Parliament, Stortorvet, the National Theater, University Square, and throughout Oslo’s suburbs. The Oslo subway system (T-banen) provides four lines east, and four lines west and north of the city. Schedule and fare can be located at www.trafikanten.no. Children travel at half-price, and eight-coupon “Flexi cards” are also available.
Taxi service is available on-call in Oslo, however it is also very expensive. They include hefty surcharges during evening hours, however they are generally honest. Due to the cost, taxis should probably be avoided and the bus, subway or tram system used instead.
Starting in mid-April, ferries travel from various locations and travel to Bygdoy and various parts of Oslofjord. Contact the Tourist Information Office for more information (24-14-77-00).
Oslo is very unique in that it offers bike rentals at moderate prices and encourages their use through free maps. There are a number of interesting biking routes in Oslo, and a bike ride would be a unique way to experience the city.
