London Transport

London England Transport - London the British capital, is a beautiful and vibrant city. This city offers the absolute best of food, theater, shopping, fashion, film, music, and much more. London has a long and storied history but also offers world-renown and influential culture.

Heathrow airport (www.heathrowairport.co.uk) is the closest to central London; however Gatwick offers fast train service there as well. London is a 35 minute ride through the Underground from Heathrow to center London. Taxies are also available as are buses. Additionally, the Heathrow Express is available (www.heathrowexpress.com) which is a 100mph train that runs between Heathrow and Paddington Station in center London.

London Underground and buses both run on the same ticket system. There are six fare zones which radiate in rings from zone 1. Tube and bus maps are available at all stations, or can be downloaded at www.tfl.gov.uk/tfl. Discount Passes are available with a number of discounts. Children under 11 typically travel for free. Travelcards provide unlimited use of all transportation systems including Underground, buses, and Railways.

The London Underground (Tube) is the fastest way around the city. They are easy to use, because they are clearly marked and color-coded. Every major attraction and area of London can essentially be accessed using the Underground.

London is a rare city where the bus lines are priced the same as the Underground, and that are just as good and convenient. Free bus maps are available at www.tfl.gov.uk. Fares are not collected on board, only pre-purchased tickets are accepted which speeds bus travel. Buses run 24 hours a day, however during peak season; wait times can be long as buses often fill up fast.

Taxis are conveniently available at cab ranks or can be hailed in the street. London cabs are comfortable, surcharges are imposed after 8pm and on weekends and public holidays.

Driving in London is not recommended as the streets are very congested, and it is much easier to get around without a car.
