The Beijing Capital International Airport (PEK) is situated 25km (16 miles) northeast of Beijing. Fortunately, a dedicated Airport Expressway connects the airport with the center of Beijing. A railway is opening in 2008, and an Airport-City Shuttle is available from outside all terminals and offers a choice of five routes into the city. Metered taxi service is available as well.

The Beijing metro offers four lines (two underground and two light rails). The system includes the Circle Line (Line 2), Line 1, Line 8, and Line 13. There are additional lines that are planned to be completed in 2008. Stations are numbered, and platform signs indicate the next station in each direction – so navigating the metro is very easy.

Taxi service is available; however city streets are often clogged so travel can be very slow. Taxi service, as well as any street transportation, should be avoided for this reason. All taxis are metered. Buses are available as well; however the bus should be a last resort.

Travel by bicycle can be a great way to experience Beijing, however only recommended for the enthusiast who is comfortable on a bike, as there are many bikes in the city. During certain times of the day, however, bicycles can travel faster than a taxi or a bus.
