Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (www.atlanta-airport.com) is the major local airport for Atlanta, and it is also the world's largest and busiest passenger airport. Most large hotels in the area offer free guest shuttle service, which can be requested through a courtesy phone near baggage claim. Additionally, other transportation options from the airport include MARTA rapid-rail, bus service, rental cards, and taxi service.
Transportation inside Atlanta is very simple, centered on the main street (Peachtree Street). MARTA (Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority) offers a subway and bus network that provides access to almost every part of town via public transportation. Operating since 1979, MARTA stations are clean and service is very reliable, and provides much faster transportation than the bus service. It features two lines, the orange lines, which travel north and south between the airport, and Doraville and North Springs, and the blue lines, which travel east and west between Indian Creek and Hamilton E. Holms. Both lines intersect at the Five Points Station downtown. Tickets are very reasonable, and multi-day passes are available. For route and schedule information, visit www.itsmarta.com.
MARTA buses are also available and travel almost anywhere within the city and to most major attractions, however travel is much more slow than the subway with long wait times.
Driving in Atlanta is not recommended, as traffic can be very congested, in some spots even during non-rush times. Since it is possible to visit most Atlanta sights via transit, public transportation should be used during any visit to Atlanta. If you do drive and need a rental, just about every rental agency is available in the city.
Taxies are available throughout the city, however they can't always be hailed on the street. Although there are always cabs waiting outside airports, hotels, and most MARTA stations except the ones downtown. Rates are somewhat complicated, and differ whether you are in the Downtown Zone, or in other zones - however they are mostly flat rates within the zones, and metered outside specified zones.
